Access, Parking, Washrooms

SDU Main Building is Building #5.  Building #6 has 2 accessible, metered, parking spots. Building #4 has 1 accessible, metered parking spot, they have blue "disability parking" metres, and pictures on the ground. Placard must be visible to park in these spots. If these spots are taken you can park in any of the metered visitor parking.

MacLauchlan Arena also has accessible parking spots inside their parking lot, as well as closer to the building. The main gate opens around 4:30 so you can park there for free as long as you leave after 4:30. The spots closer to the building (near building #2) are also free. If you park in either of these spots and need assistance getting to Main Building, Security Services can pick you up and drive you, please contact them at (902) 566-0384.

All Visitor Parking spots are free after 7pm, and on weekends. You can park in any of the metered spots for free, or if you're showing your placard, you can park in any of the accessible spots that say you need a parking pass (you don't after 7pm and on weekends).

Main Building has 3 entrances, one is not accessible as it requires you to go up stairs, there is a flat access entrance which is the best option (see map below) and a ramp option. Both of these entrances will take you to the main hall. the Elevator to go up to Main 520 is there, the faculty Lounge is right there, and Main 213 is down the hall. This floor has accessible washrooms, which are right next to Main 213.  These washrooms will also be gender neutral for the conference. If you wish to use gendered washrooms, the 1st, 3rd, and 4th floor of Main Building have gendered washrooms that are accessible.  There will be signs.

General Parking

On Friday, MacLauchlan Arena is the best place to park if you do not require accessible parking. This lot is gated but you can enter at any time and the gates open at 4:30/5pm, allowing you to leave for free any time after that.

On Saturday all lots marked VP (metered) are free, MacLauchlan Arena parking is free, and lots A, B, C, D and E are free/do not require a parking pass. Any spot marked with a blue disabled parking marker, or with a sign in front of it with the blue disabled parking picture requires you display a disability placard issued by your province of residence/car registration in order to park there at all times. If you do not have a placard, do not park there. You will be ticketed and towed.

The Aquatic Facilities Parking is gated until 9pm every day.

There are a number of options for accommodations during your stay for the conference. We have a number of Charlottetown residents willing to billet attendees at no cost. If you'd like to stay at someone's house for the conference, please email us at difficultdialogues3@upei.ca to be put in contact with people (please specify if you have specific needs such as accessibility, allergies, parking, etc.) We will also have a Facebook group closer to the conference date where people can organize carpools and accommodations.

If you'd prefer to stay in a hotel or B&B, Charlottetown has plenty of options for you.

If you'd like something close to the university, Canada's Best Value Inn is located on Capital Drive, just minutes from UPEI, and a 15 minute drive to downtown Charlottetown (Cabs under $10 for 1 person) The cost for a room with two double beds is $89.99 + Taxes, and they offer CAA, senior, and government rates.

If you'd rather be downtown, there are several big chains such as Best Western Charlottetown, and Delta Charlottetown , and downtown Charlottetown offers many B&Bs including The Sonata Inn, The Eden Hall Inn, The Cranford Inn, and The Shipwright Inn, all of which are a 15 minute or less drive to UPEI.   Prices vary, and we recommend consulting hotels.com or expedia.ca if you're looking for the best deal.  We've linked a map of Charlottetown with the hotels/b&bs discussed on it so you can see their proximity.  The Delta Hotel, to UPEI is approximately 3.4km
